Copy/Edit the World 10/10

This is from a brochure from the Golden Gate Park Conservatory of Flowers in San Francisco:
1) There should be a hyphen between "ever" and "abundant."
2) The comma after "orchid" should be removed.
3) The comma after "Indonesia" should be removed.
4) In the second paragraph the comma after cacao should be removed and the comma after coffee should become a period. The "and" at the beginning of the next sentence should read "There are" to punctuate the run-on sentence.
5) The comma after "tropics" should be removed.
6) The hyphen between "epiphytes" and "plants" should be removed and replaced by a colon. Alternatively, it can be replaced by "which are".

Gordon Greb Day

Gordon Greb Day

Students in room 226 of Dwight Bentley Hall recognized accomplishments and honored the presence of Dr. Gordon Greb yesterday, October 5, as they sang “Happy Birthday” to the world-renown broadcaster, journalist and educator.
“Everybody has a story,” proclaimed Dr. Greb before going on to discuss his experience of more than 60 years in the field of broadcasting.
Few professionals in the industry of journalism & broadcasting have such a long list of accolades as the celebrated Dr. Greb – even fewer have an entire day dedicated to them.
October 5 was Gordon Greb Day and its guest of honor entertained a schedule of student visits, a College of Applied Science luncheon and special evening dinner hosted by the faculty of the advertising, journalism and public relations departments, according to Interim School Director Bob Rucker's website.
Co-founder of SJSU's Journalism and Mass Communications college and former professor, Dr. Greb recalled his last words on campus: “Take care of the children, and we will be alright.”
Dr. Greb is a strong proponent of the U.S. Constitution's First Amendment and has high hopes for the newest generations of citizens who seek to exercise their rights.
He spoke about the educational positions he has held over the course of his lifetime; students at multiple universities in the U.S., the U.K., China, and the Southeast Pacific have all received the tutelage of the broadcasting legend.
However, Dr. Greb has worked in the major metropolitan areas of north and south California and recognizes Silicon Valley's importance to his field of expertise.
While speaking to students, Dr. Greb remarked that San Jose, especially, is “like Athens” of ancient Greece: both have loved and appreciated the dissemination of knowledge and this is “a place where great ideas have happened over and over again.”
It is no coincidence that Dr. Greb himself has contributed to the region's reputation for “great ideas,” as he has helped found many radio stations in the state which are still active today.
Awarded and given official recognitions on countless occasions, Dr. Greb has traveled the globe, accumulated wisdom of journalism and mass communications and has endowed scores of pupils with the capability to sustain and develop the practices he has pioneered in his trade –  yesterday was Gordon Greb Day.

Barn Yard Story

Racecourse Blaze

An explosion in San Mateo ignited the Bay Meadows Racecourse barn this morning at 4 a.m., just one day before the course opened for the horse-racing season.
“Flames were shooting out of the building when we got there,” said Bernard Perry, fire chief, “The fire is definitely suspicious.”
The fire smoldered until noon and in the aftermath it was determined that a total of 13 thoroughbreds and two saddle horses had been killed. Ten horses survived, yet two suffered burn injuries.
Arson is currently suspected and, according to Dan Bucci, an assistant manager at racecourse, it is believed that an incendiary device placed at the center of the structure was what caused the inferno.
An arson squad was called to investigate the fire and all that remained of the one-story wooden barn – seven rows of scorched supports.
So far, there are no reports of human casualties and no suspect has been detained.
